Inclusion Criteria
severe acute respiratory failure managed with ECMO
- Control group: patients with severe acute respiratory failure managed without ECMO
- Informed consent of patient/ next of kin
- central venous and arterial catheter in place
Exclusion Criteria
- age under 18 years
- congenital malformation, severe valve dysfunction, severe arrhythmia
- predicted survival less than 24 hours
