Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • •Aphthous cohort: recurrent aphthae
  • •\- Healthy cohort: no occurrence of aphthae to date
  • •\- Non\-smoker
  • •\- Last tooth brushing at least 12 hours ago
  • •\- Fasting for blood collection (8 to 12 hours without eating or drinking
  • •nothing to drink (except water))

Exclusion Criteria

  • •\- Pregnancy
  • •\- Breastfeeding
  • •\- Serious general illness (diabetes mellitus, oncological diseases,
  • •immunosuppression oncological diseases, immunosuppression, e.g. due
  • •to HIV infection, blood diseases)
  • •\- chronic immunological diseases (e.g. Crohn's disease, coeliac disease,
  • •lichen planus)
  • •\- rheumatic diseases (e.g. Behçet's syndrome)
  • •\- Periodontitis and chronic oral mucosal diseases
  • •\- Use of antibiotics/immunosuppressants within the last 6 months
