•1. Age <1 year
•2. Hospitalization in one of the study hospitals
•3. Fulfilling the clinical criteria for Pertussis
•4. Parent/ guardian of the child give written informed consent
•Clinical criteria
•Progressive cough, possibly paroxysmal, with coryza and no or minimal fever
•PLUS one or more of the following symptoms or conditions:
•3. Post-tussive emesis
•4. Cyanosis
•5. Seizure
•6. Pneumonia
•7. Worsening of symptoms at night
•8. Increased white blood cell (WBC) count (>= 20,000 WBC per mcl with >= 10,000 lymphocytes per mcl)
•9. Close exposure to an older child, adolescent or adult with prolonged afebrile cough illness.
•10. Neonates and young infants ( <60 days) may present without cough and any one or more of the above symptoms without any obvious cause may be considered for suspicion of pertussis and inclusion as possible pertussis.
