Inclusion Criteria

Forty-five individuals will be recruited and allocated to one of three study groups, according to the inclusion criteria: group control (C): fifteen with systemically healthy individuals, without Down syndrome (DS) and who qualify in the following definition of periodontal and gingival health: no loss of clinical attachment, with probing depth of up to 3 mm, bleeding in less than 10% of sites, no radiographic bone loss and age between 19 and 35 years. Group P: fifteen systemically healthy individuals without DS; diagnosed with grade C, stage III or IV periodontitis and aged between 19 and 35 years. DS group: fifteen systemically healthy individuals, diagnosed with DS and periodontitis; as a manifestation of systemic diseases and aged between 19 and 35 years

Exclusion Criteria

Exclusion criteria will be: current or past smoking habit; pregnancy or breastfeeding; use of antibiotic or anti-inflammatory medication in the 6-month period prior to the study; previous periodontal treatment within 6 months before sample collection; diabetes or other systemic diseases that affect the immuno-inflammatory process
