Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • 1.No preoperative voice dysfunction.
  • 2. No preoperative corrected hypocalcemia.
  • 3. Patient requiring total/neartotal thyroidectomy.
  • 4. Normal preoperative serum calcium and iPth.

Exclusion Criteria

  • 1. Refusal to give consent.
  • 2. History of head and neck surgery and previous irradiation.
  • 3. Known vocal cord dysfunction on laryngoscopy.
  • 4. Contraindication to use dexamethasone.
  • stomach and duodenal ulcer disease currently or in the past.
  • 5. taking medications that affect calcium metabolism: anti-resorptive drugs, anabolic drugs,thiazide diuretics, furosemide, proton pump inhibitors, antacids.
  • 6. Staged thyroidectomy will not be included in study.(like completion thyroidectomy)
  • 7. Thyroid malignancy with extrathyroid extension or requiring LN dissection will be excluded from study.
