We enrolled the patients age 18-year-old or more with the diagnosis of severe sepsis or septic shock according to the Surviving Sepsis Campaign international guidelines for management of severe sepsis and septic shock 2012.
We excluded severe sepsis and septic shock patients who were diagnosed and underwent resuscitation for more than 12 hours before. The other exclusion criteria included patients with infective endocarditis, cardiac tamponade, pulmonary embolism, or post cardiac arrest. Patients with history of documented myocardial infarction, decompensated heart failure, history of impaired left ventricular systolic function or who had surface electrocardiogram (ECG) showed Q wave in 2 or more consecutive leads were all excluded. Patients or those with relatives who decline to participate in the study were also excluded.
