Synbiotics plus enteral nutrition during neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with esophageal cancer did not reduce the occurrence of febrile neutropenia compared to prophylactic antibiotics. Neutropenia and diarrhea were significantly less severe in the Syn+EN group.

Patients with esophageal cancer scheduled for neoadjuvant chemotherapy
Exclusion Criteria
1. Synchronous or metachronous malignancy
2. Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus
