Effect of preoperative infusion of dexmedetomidine on intraoperative anaesthetic drug consumption under general anaesthesia

Phase 4
Completed
Conditions
Patient with American Society of Anaesthesiologists Physical status 1 and 2 posted for elective surgery under general anaesthesia
Registration Number

Brief Summary

General anaesthesia with inhalational agents associated with adjuvant intravenous agents provide better sedation, hypnosis and analgesia. Drugs with such effects already established in literature include benzodiazepines and opioids. New intravenous agents like alpha2 adrenergic agonist produce sedation ,anxiolysis and analgesia and has good haemodynamic profile.

Hence, it is hypothesized that preinduction loading dose of dexmedetomidine  1 microgram/kg would reduce inhalational anaesthesia agent isoflurane consumption and thus cost effective and also provide better haemodynamic stability and recovery profile.

Primary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
To assess the effect of preanaesthetic administration of dexmedetomidine on isoflurane consumption. At the end of the surgery
Secondary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
To assess effect of dexmedetomidine on intraoperative haemodynamic stability and recovery profile.Baseline, every 5 minutes after infusion of study drug/placebo till end of anaesthesia heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, bispectral index values were noted. Postoperative recovery profiles were assessed using modified aldrete score at immediate postop,30 and 60 minutes.
