Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Respiratory rate \>30/minute on room air
  • spO2 \<90% on room air OR P/F \<300
  • Active use of accessory muscles of respiration

Exclusion Criteria

  • Patients who are not consenting to the study
  • Patients requiring IPPV immediately or within 1 hour of NIV therapy
  • Patients with underlying ILD
  • Patients with chest wall deformities
  • Patients presenting with trauma
  • Patients with history of diaphragm/thoracic surgery
  • Pregnant women
  • Patients using NIV/BIPAP at home
