American society of Anesthesiologists physical status class I-III, lung cancer,
Patients who are scheduled to undergo elective thoracotomy and to be managed with continuous thoracic paravertebral block for postoperative pain control, Informed consent
any physical or mental illness rendering the patient unable to perform spirometry, respiratory diffuculty at rest,contralateral diaphragmatic paralysis,preexisted ipsilateral shoulder pain, presence of coagulopathy, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, neurologic deficit, infection at the site of the block, drug or alcohol abuse, chronic pain, peptic ulcer disease, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and a known allergy to local anesthetic, previous thoracic surgery, patient refusal,
