inclusion criteria: men and women 18 to 45 years old with mood disorder diagnosis(major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder)based on DSM4TR criteria; candidate of ECT; without sensitivity to liothyronine; negative pregnancy test before treatment initiation; using safe contraception during the study.
exclusion criteria: unstable cardiovascular disease; history of myocardial infarction in past 3 months; current unstable angina; untreated endocrine disorders; uncontrolled hypertention; structural brain anomaly; cerebral infarct or hemorrhage in past 1 month; unstable or bleeding vascular anneurism; severe respiratory disorders that are contraindications of general anesthesia; decompensating heart problems; heart vulvular disorders; brain space occupying lesions leading to increased intracranial pressure; pregnancy; addiction( except smoking) during the study; ECT treatment in past 6 months; allergic reaction to liothyronine; mental retardation; delirium, dementia or other amnestic disorders; occurrence of ECT-induced delirium during the study; lithium administration during the study.
