A Phenomenological Study On Narrative Identity Among Bereaved Young Adults

The primary purpose of this prospective cross-sectional phenomenological study is to explore how young adults (18–26 years) who have experienced the loss of one parent within the past 2–5 years construct and reconstruct their narrative identity. Using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach, the study will examine processes of meaning-making, identity disruption and change, cultural and social influences, and evolving future orientation following parental bereavement. After obtaining necessary approvals, eligible participants will be recruited through online platforms and institutional settings. Following informed consent, participants will be screened using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). Those meeting inclusion criteria will complete a sociodemographic data sheet and participate in an in-depth semi-structured interview conducted either in person in a confidential clinical setting or via secure online video platform, based on participant preference. Interviews will be audio-recorded with consent, and reflexive journaling will be maintained. Analysis will follow a systematic and iterative IPA framework to identify emergent themes and underlying meanings. Findings aim to develop a conceptual framework of narrative identity after parental loss.
