Single arm clinical study to evaluate the efficacy of chandanadi bidalaka in pittaj abhishyanda with special reference to acute mucopurulent conjunctivitis.

THIS IS SINGLE ARM CLINICAL STUDY IN WHICH AYURVEDIC FORMULATION WILL BE PROVIDED TO 40 PATIENTS SHOWING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ABHISHYANDA ( ACUTE MUCOPURULENT CONJUNCTIVITIS) . THE AGE GROUP TAKEN FOR STUDY TRIAL WILL BE BETWEEN 10 YEARS TO 50 YEARS. AYURVEDIC FORMULATIONS WILL BE GIVEN ON 0,3RD,5TH,7TH.15TH DAY .AND THE TOTAL DURATION OF THE STUDY WILL BE 1YEAR AND 6 MONTHS ,THAT IS 18 MONTHS.FINAL CONCLUSION WILL BE DRAWN ON THE BASIS OF STASTISTICAL METHOD

This study has been undertaken because we come across a number of patients of Netra Abhishyanda (conjunctivitis) in day to day practice, its incidence are increasing due to poor hygienic conditions, hot and dry climate, poor sanitation and overcrowding. In modern science, treatment for conjunctivitis is topical antibiotics drops, oral systemic antibiotics and anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs.

Our work place and its closer localities are full of industrial zone. Probably due to industrial pollution, lack of hygiene and climatic conditions good number of patients with Pittaj Abhishyanda (Acute Muco-Purulent Conjunctivitis) come to Shalakya tantra O.P.D. As we have to treat sample of patients with Netra Abhishyanda (conjunctivitis) in day to day practice of ophthalmology, we selected Abhishyanda for the purpose of study.  Its incidences are increasing due to hot & dry climate, dirty habitat, unhygienic conditions, poor sanitation and pollution. Modern science treats conjunctivitis with topical antibiotic drops, systemic antibiotics orally and use of analgesic & anti-inflammatory drugs as per symptoms. Also these antibiotics do have serious side effects too. Ayurveda has given various easier and specific treatment procedures for Abhishyanda.

Pittaj Abhishyanda is characterized by Daha, Prapak, shishirabhinanda, Dhumayana, Bashpasamucchaya, Ushnashruta, Netra pitata. And these lakshanas are very similar to Acute Mucopurulant Conjunctivitis as its Clinical features are: Discomfort, foreign body, blurring and redness of sudden onset (due to engorgement of vessels), Mild photophobia, i.e. difficulty to tolerate light. Mucopurulent discharge from the eyes. Sticking together of lid margins with discharge during sleep. Slight blurring of vision due to mucous flakes in front of cornea. The Management of this condition is based on various measures like Aschotan, Putpaka, Anjana, Dhoompan, Lepa, Bidalak. Among them we have selected Bidalak for the Study.
