Brief Summary

The principal aim of drug utilization research is to facilitate the rational use ofdrugs in populations. Drug utilization research in itself does not necessarilyprovide answers, but it contributes to rational drug use as drug utilizationstudies increase the understanding of how drugs are being used and it describesnot only the drug prevalence and incidence but also the extent of use at a certainmoment and/or in a certain area. Such descriptions are most meaningful and theyform part of a continuous evaluation system. TheWHO has recommended 5 prescribing indicators. Each of theseindicators is:

1)   Importantand reflect an important dimension of performance. Even though data may bereadily and consistently available, they may not indicate anything importantabout the system performance.

2)   Measurablewithin existing constraints of time and variable quality and availability ofsource data.

3)   Reliable asit gives consistent results over time and with different observers.

4)   Validand allow a consistent and clear interpretation and have a similar meaningacross different environments
