Inclusion Criteria
adolescents with non-suicidal self-injur/ borderline personality disorder; age and sex matched healthy controls
Exclusion Criteria
Other major psychiatric disorders (e.g.schizophrenia), current episode of substance abuse, cardiovascular disease (e.g. hypertension)

Name Time Method Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal (HPA) axis assessed by saliva cortisol pre and post painful stimulation;<br>autonomic nervous system response continuously assessed by heart rate and heart rate variability and blood pressure pre and post painful stimulation
- Secondary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method The latencies to the first pain sensation (pain threshold) and to intolerable pain (pain tolerance) are measured with a stopwatch in seconds; pain intensity ratings are obtained using visual analogue scales and standardized questionnaires
