- •Adult patients (20-65 yrs) of either sex, ASA physical status I and II, scheduled for major upper abdominal surgery under general anesthesia and thoracic epidural analgesia were included in the study. Surgical procedures included gastrectomy, colectomy, pancreaticodudenectomy, exploratory laparotomy and hepaticojejunostomy.

- •Patient refusal, coagulation disorders, signs of local or systemic infection, and anatomical abnormalities.
