All hand sanitizers reduced the number of bacteria 10 minutes after use, although the reduction was not statistically significant. Twenty minutes after use there was a significant reduction in the number of bacteria after using a sanitizer containing capric acid, and the number of microbes at this time point was reduced from the use of the hand sanitizer containing a quaternary ammonium compound.

Name Time Method Composite primary outcome of numbers of bacteria and fungi on fingers at different time points (10 or 20 minutes and 4 hours ) after use of hand sanitizers.. Microbe numbers counted after growth on agar plates. [baseline (prior to use of hand sanitizers), 10 and 20 minutes and 4 hours after use]
