For the focus groups in the birth centres:
Midwives who have completed their midwifery studies in Germany, are state-certified, and have more than three years experience in birth assistance at the birth centre.
For the midwives commencing work at the birth centre:
Midwives who have completed their midwifery studies in Germany, are state-certified, and began their training at the birth centre no more than three months prior to recruitment.
Midwives who completed their midwifery studies in a country other than Germany.

Name Time Method The primary goal of this study is to describe and delineate the skills and knowledge that need to be acquired by state-certified midwives to work independently in free-standing birth centres in Germany to support women to achieve a physiological birth.
