Effect of Scapular Stabilization Exercises on Pain, Strength and Functional Disability in Desktop Workers with Scapular Dyskinesis: A Pre-Post Experimental Study

Scapular dyskinesis is commonly observed among desktop workers due to prolonged sitting, poor posture, and repetitive computer use. It is associated with shoulder and neck pain, reduced muscle strength, and functional limitations. Scapular stabilization exercises are widely used in rehabilitation; however, evidence regarding their effectiveness in desktop workers is limited.The objective is to evaluate the effect of scapular stabilization exercises on pain, muscle strength, and functional disability in desktop workers with scapular dyskinesis.
A pre–post experimental study was conducted among 23 desktop workers aged 25–40 years diagnosed with scapular dyskinesis. Participants underwent a supervised scapular stabilization exercise program for three weeks (3 sessions per week, 45 minutes per session). Outcome measures included Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain, Handheld Dynamometer (HHD) for muscle strength, Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), and Neck Disability Index (NDI). Pre- and post-intervention data were analyzed using paired t-test with a significance level set at p < 0.05.The study demonstrated statistically significant improvements in all outcome measures following the intervention. Pain levels decreased significantly (VAS: 4.04 ± 0.74 to 3.51 ± 0.85; p = 0.0001). Functional disability showed significant improvement (SPADI: 66.70 ± 12.13 to 61.17 ± 12.30; p = 0.0001; NDI: 23.13 ± 5.66 to 19.91 ± 5.97; p = 0.0001). Muscle strength of scapular stabilizing muscles also increased significantly (p = 0.0001).Scapular stabilization exercises are effective in reducing pain, improving muscle strength, and enhancing functional outcomes in desktop workers with scapular dyskinesis.Scapular dyskinesis, scapular stabilization, desktop workers, shoulder pain, muscle strength, functional disability.

入选标准
- •Software designers, developers, coders, or any computer office workers working at least 4 hours a day, 40 hr per week; with more than 1 year of work experience.
- •Male Participants aged 25 – 40 years old.
- •Presence of shoulder or neck pain lasting for at least 5 months.
- •Visual analogue scale (VAS) with a range of 5 or less during work or at rest.
- •Participants graded 1 and 2 on the Scapular Dyskinesis Test.
排除标准
- •Participants with a history of surgery in the shoulder or neck area.
- •Participants with neurological conditions that could affect muscle strength or function.
- •Participants graded 3 on the Scapular Dyskinesis Test.
- •Visual analogue scale (VAS) with a range of more than 5 during work or at rest.
- •Participants with conditions like rotator cuff tears and impingement syndrome.
- •Acute injury or trauma to the shoulder within the last 3 months.
- •Participants with a history of fracture in the past 3 months.
- •Participants who are not cooperative.
