Accidental Splashes, Spillages And NeedleStick Injuries In Obstetrical And Gynecological Procedures Among Health Care Workers

Health-care workers (HCWs) are always at potential risk of occupational exposure (OE) to infectious blood and body fluidsbecause of the environment in which they work. This can lead to the acquisition of blood-borne pathogens such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B and C which can be life-threatening. Needlestick injuries (NSIs) are common and have been recognized as one of the potential occupational hazards. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that each year 385,000 NSIs and other sharp related injuries are sustained by HCWs, an average of 1000 sharp injuries per day. Such events impose high psychological and financial burden on individuals, families and the society. Apart from sharp injuries, accidental splashes and spillages are also common occupational accidents reported in high risk speciality like Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The proposed study aims to assess if HCWs are aware of the risks of eye and facial splashes, NSIs during Obstetrical and Gynaecological procedures and enumerate the factors associated with high rates of splashes and NSIs. Further, it will be designed to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices among HCWs regarding such accidental occupational hazards. Also, through this study we will understand how important it is to report such accidental injuries in the hospital in order to assure an early intervention and follow up of injured person, preventing the spread of deadly blood borne pathogens.
