A controversial but effective treatment for meth addiction gains ground

Bernard Groves, a methamphetamine addict, has struggled with quitting despite multiple rehab attempts. Unlike opioid addiction, there are no FDA-approved medications for stimulant addiction like meth and cocaine, leading to the use of contingency management, where small rewards are given for negative drug tests. This treatment, though effective, faced resistance due to concerns of bribery and fraud. Recently, California became the first state to fund contingency management with Medicaid dollars, offering gift cards for negative tests, which has shown promising results for some, like Groves. However, access remains limited, and not all patients can benefit, highlighting the need for broader implementation and acceptance of this treatment approach.
