Pranlukast selectively antagonizes leukotriene D (LTD) at the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor, CysLT, in the human airway. Pranlukast inhibits the actions of LTD at the CysLT receptor, preventing airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, and enhanced secretion of thick, viscous mucus.
Used as an adjunct to the standard therapy of inhaled steroids with inhaled long- and/or short-acting beta-agonists.
