Background

Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgY are chicken egg antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 which have the potential to provide temporary protection against the virus when administered as intranasal drops. To create these antibodies, chickens are injected in the chest with the spike protein, which is the surface protein of SARS-CoV-2; this results in an immune response mounted by the chickens towards the injected spike protein. From there, the chicken antibodies are harvested from the egg yolks of the eggs laid by these chickens and formulated into the nasal drops that can be administered. These antibodies are currently being investigated against COVID-19 in the trial NCT04567810 (Safety, Tolerability, and Pharmacokinetics of Anti-Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Chicken Egg Antibody (IgY) (COVID-19)).
