Probenecid: Package Insert / Prescribing Information

Probenecid is a uricosuric agent used to treat hyperuricemia in gout and as an adjuvant to penicillin therapy to elevate plasma levels. It inhibits urate reabsorption, increasing uric acid excretion. Contraindicated in children under 2, those with hypersensitivity, blood dyscrasias, or uric acid kidney stones. Warnings include exacerbation of gout, increased methotrexate toxicity, and contraindication with salicylates. Precautions involve monitoring for renal impairment and drug interactions. Adverse reactions include CNS, metabolic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, hypersensitivity, hematologic, and integumentary effects. Dosage varies for gout and penicillin therapy, with specific recommendations for adults and children.
