Mack Roach, III, MD, FASTRO, a radiation oncologist and professor at UCSF, has been selected to receive the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 2024 Gold Medal Award. This honor recognizes Roach's significant contributions to the field, particularly in the treatment and management of prostate cancer.
Roach's research focuses on innovative techniques for prostate cancer treatment, including three-dimensional (3D) conformal radiation therapy and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). His development of predictive equations, most notably the 'Roach Formula' for estimating the risk of lymph node and seminal vesicle involvement, has significantly impacted patient treatment protocols.
Contributions to Prostate Cancer Treatment
Dr. Roach spearheaded a Phase III trial utilizing prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels as a measure for outcomes, incorporating PSA nadir as a secondary endpoint. He also developed a model to predict disease-specific and overall survival based on data from prostate cancer patients treated in Phase III trials.
"This award is an incredible honor and I thank ASTRO for recognizing the work I have been involved with in treatment, research and heath equity," said Roach. "I also want to thank my colleagues and my inspiring patients who provide the strongest motivation for advancing our field."
Addressing Healthcare Disparities
Roach's commitment to community service includes over two decades of volunteer work in cancer control and reducing healthcare disparities. He served on the National Cancer Advisory Board (NCAB) and received an honorary doctorate from Morehouse College.
Academic and Professional Background
Dr. Roach has been a UCSF faculty member since 1990 and chaired the Department of Radiation Oncology from 2006 to 2015. He holds a medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed fellowships and residencies at multiple institutions.
Roach is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Cancer Society. The ASTRO Gold Medal will be presented at ASTRO’s 66th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.
