Dr. Reddy's Laboratories has announced the launch of Elobixibat, a first-in-class drug for the treatment of chronic constipation, in India. The drug will be marketed under the brand name BixiBat.
This launch marks Dr. Reddy’s as the first company to bring Elobixibat to patients in India, following approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) after the submission of Phase-3 clinical trial data to the Subject Expert Committee of the regulator.
Mechanism of Action
Elobixibat is designed to address chronic constipation by inhibiting the reabsorption of bile acids from the ileum. This action increases the concentration of bile acids in the colonic lumen, leading to increased bowel movements through the stimulation of both colonic motility and fluid secretion, irrespective of transit speed.
