Haleon Partners with Brightseed to Leverage AI for Natural Bioactive Discovery in Consumer Health
• Haleon and Brightseed have formed a strategic collaboration to utilize Brightseed's Forager® AI platform for discovering plant-based small molecules with potential health benefits.
• The partnership will give Haleon's scientists direct access to the Forager platform, integrating AI-powered discovery into their research and product development pipelines.
• Brightseed's technology has already identified plant compounds with applications in metabolic health, gut health, and immunity, aligning with Haleon's commitment to science-backed consumer health innovation.
Consumer health giant Haleon (LSE/NYSE: HLN) and AI biotech company Brightseed have announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the discovery of plant-based bioactive compounds for human health applications. The collaboration will leverage Brightseed's proprietary artificial intelligence platform, Forager®, to identify natural small molecules with therapeutic potential.
The partnership represents a significant advancement in applying cutting-edge technology to natural product research, potentially transforming how consumer health products are developed and formulated.
Brightseed's Forager® platform employs artificial intelligence to map bioactive compounds found in plants and other natural sources. The technology identifies these compounds' mechanisms of action and potential impacts on human biology at a scale and speed previously unattainable through traditional research methods.
Under the agreement, Haleon scientists will gain direct access to the Forager platform, enabling them to integrate AI-powered discovery capabilities into their existing research and product development workflows.
"We are thrilled with this partnership that augments our scientific capabilities towards groundbreaking advancements," said Sandrine Alvarado, VP and Head of Future Horizons R&D at Haleon. "This collaboration is pivotal in accelerating discoveries and innovations that are firmly rooted in superior, trusted science and the highest standards of scientific integrity."
Brightseed has already demonstrated success with its AI approach, having identified plant compounds with potential applications across multiple health domains including metabolic health, gut health, and immunity. These discoveries align with Haleon's consumer health portfolio, which spans oral health, pain relief, respiratory health, digestive health, and vitamins, minerals, and supplements.
The collaboration comes at a time when consumer demand for natural, scientifically-validated health products continues to grow. By combining Haleon's extensive research capabilities and market reach with Brightseed's innovative technology, the partnership aims to develop next-generation natural health solutions with robust scientific backing.
Lee Chae, Co-Founder and CEO at Brightseed, emphasized the transformative potential of the collaboration: "Forager's AI not only accelerates innovation, it also expands possibilities in ways that would have been otherwise intractable. With this collaboration, Haleon is poised to translate those possibilities into an engine for growth. By integrating Forager® into its research ecosystem, Haleon is furthering its commitment to improving everyday health with scientifically validated, nature-inspired solutions."
The partnership represents a significant shift in how consumer health companies approach product development. Traditional methods of identifying bioactive compounds in natural sources are often time-consuming and resource-intensive, with uncertain outcomes. AI-driven approaches like Forager® can potentially identify promising compounds more efficiently and predict their biological effects before expensive laboratory testing.
For Haleon, whose brand portfolio includes household names such as Advil, Sensodyne, Panadol, Voltaren, and Centrum, the collaboration could lead to enhanced formulations of existing products or entirely new offerings based on newly discovered bioactive compounds.
The integration of AI into natural product research also addresses a longstanding challenge in the field: the vast number of potentially beneficial compounds in nature that remain unexplored. By systematically mapping these compounds and their biological activities, Brightseed and Haleon aim to unlock a new frontier in consumer health innovation.
While specific development targets have not been disclosed, the collaboration will likely focus initially on areas aligned with Haleon's existing product categories. The company's emphasis on science-backed solutions suggests that any new products resulting from the partnership will undergo rigorous testing to validate efficacy and safety.
The partnership also highlights the growing convergence of artificial intelligence, biosciences, and consumer health—a trend that may reshape how health products are discovered, developed, and brought to market in the coming years.
As both companies work to integrate their capabilities, the consumer health landscape may soon see a new generation of products that combine the trusted power of natural ingredients with the precision and validation of advanced scientific methods.
