Treatment with cannabidiol (CBD) in young individuals diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) has shown significant improvements across several cognitive, behavioral, and executive domains, according to survey data. The study, known as the Behavior, Cognition and More (BECOME) study, involved 55 caregivers reporting on 55 patients with TSC, who were treated with a 100 mg oral solution of Epidiolex, a plant-derived CBD formulation, for at least 6 months.
Key findings from the survey include:
- 81% of patients could learn new things.
- 75% could follow simple instructions.
- 70% were more certain of their surroundings and demonstrated more alertness.
- 68% could better maintain attention.
- 65% could more easily accomplish visuo-spatial tasks.
Additionally, significant improvements were noted in language utilization, interpersonal communication, and expressions reflecting mental states. Caregivers also reported enhancements in mood, social engagement, and reductions in feelings of frustration, anxiety, repetitive behaviors, and aggression.
Dr. Debopam Samanta, a child neurologist involved in the study, emphasized the importance of non-seizure outcomes in improving the health-related quality of life for patients with TSC. The findings suggest that CBD treatment not only addresses seizure control but also significantly impacts cognitive and social functions, offering a comprehensive approach to managing TSC.
