Dana-Farber Launches Innovative PA Oncology Fellowship to Address Growing Cancer Care Demands

  • Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has developed a pioneering 12-month PA Oncology Fellowship program, becoming the first such program in the Northeast to address increasing cancer care demands.

  • The fellowship provides comprehensive training across all major oncologic areas, enabling PAs to manage complex cases, clinical trials, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Fellows receive the same credentialing and privileges as staff PAs, allowing them to function as autonomous providers while contributing to patient care during staffing shortages.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has launched an innovative Physician Assistant (PA) Oncology Fellowship program to meet the growing demands of cancer care delivery and address the need for specialized oncology professionals. The 12-month postgraduate program, the first of its kind in the Northeast, offers comprehensive clinical training across all major oncologic specialties.

Program Structure and Clinical Impact

The fellowship provides an immersive experience where participants work alongside physicians, experienced PAs, and oncology nurses. Fellows receive training in critical aspects of cancer care, including chemotherapy administration, immunotherapy management, and clinical trial oversight.
"In the past 10 to 12 years, Dana-Farber has been utilizing a greater number of PAs in the ambulatory space to provide critical comprehensive oncologic care," explains Noam E. Shabani, MS, PA-C, director of the Dana-Farber Postgraduate PA Oncology Fellowship. "This includes seeing patients on clinical trials, ordering chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as well as collaborating with medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and various other teams."

Meeting Growing Healthcare Demands

The program's development comes at a crucial time when cancer care demands are increasing significantly. Improved survival rates, better early detection methods, and expanded access to cancer care through regional campuses have led to a substantial growth in patient volume. The fellowship program helps address these challenges while maintaining high-quality care standards.
Fellows undergo the same credentialing process as staff PAs, enabling them to function as autonomous providers within a collaborative healthcare model. This approach has proven particularly valuable during staffing shortages, with fellows capable of managing 20-30 patients per week during their Clinical Immersion rotation.

Training Focus and Skill Development

The fellowship emphasizes developing comprehensive clinical skills, including:
  • Acute patient triage
  • Management of treatment toxicities
  • Differentiation between cancer-related symptoms and chronic illness exacerbations
  • Coordination of multidisciplinary care
  • Integration of primary care within oncology management
"The nature of cancer care is changing. Patients are living longer and better than ever before," Shabani notes. "Combined with improved early detection and screening methods, as well as improved access to cancer care through our regional campuses, Dana-Farber's clinical footprint is increasing significantly."

Career Pathways and Professional Development

The program serves as an ideal entry point for new PA graduates interested in oncology careers, offering more comprehensive training than traditional on-the-job programs. While experienced PAs from adjacent specialties such as internal medicine, hospitalist medicine, or emergency medicine often transition into oncology roles, this fellowship creates a direct pathway for new graduates to specialize in cancer care.
The fellowship's team-based approach ensures that fellows gain experience in collaborative care delivery while developing autonomous practice capabilities. This model not only enhances patient care but also contributes to the professional development of the next generation of oncology PAs.
