Experts from the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory have released findings from recently concluded studies, offering valuable insights into the design, execution, and analysis of pragmatic clinical trials throughout 2024. This collaborative effort encompasses perspectives from the Coordinating Center, best practices derived from Core Working Groups, and outcomes from various NIH Collaboratory Trials.
The program's contributions to peer-reviewed literature in the past year include over 30 articles, notably featuring primary results from the ICD-Pieces and Nudge trials. These trials, along with other collaborative projects, have facilitated the dissemination of key lessons learned across multiple NIH Collaboratory Trials.
To date, the program has produced over 340 published articles, solidifying its role in advancing pragmatic clinical research. Key areas of focus within the Collaboratory include:
Coordinating Center
The Coordinating Center plays a pivotal role in harmonizing efforts and resources across the Collaboratory, ensuring efficient operation and collaboration.
Cross-Core and Cross-Trial Collaborations
These collaborations are designed to foster synergy between different research areas and trials, maximizing the impact and applicability of findings.
Core Working Groups
The Core Working Groups focus on specific aspects of clinical trial design and execution:
Biostatistics and Study Design Core
This core focuses on innovative statistical methods and study designs to enhance the rigor and relevance of pragmatic trials.
Electronic Health Records Core
This core explores the use of electronic health records to streamline data collection and improve trial efficiency.
Ethics and Regulatory Core
Addressing the ethical and regulatory challenges inherent in pragmatic trials is the focus of this core.
Health Equity Core
This core aims to ensure that pragmatic trials address health disparities and promote equitable outcomes.
Implementation Science Core
This core focuses on strategies to effectively implement research findings into clinical practice.
Patient-Centered Outcomes Core
Ensuring that trials prioritize outcomes that are meaningful to patients is the goal of this core.
NIH Collaboratory Trials
The NIH Collaboratory Trials represent a diverse portfolio of pragmatic trials addressing a wide range of clinical questions:
ABATE Infection
BackInAction
BeatPain Utah
EMBED
FM-TIPS
GGC4H
GRACE
I CAN DO Surgical ACP
ICD-Pieces
The ICD-Pieces trial investigated interventions for patients with chronic kidney disease but found no reduction in hospitalization rates.
LIRE
NOHARM
Nudge
The Nudge trial assessed methods to improve adherence to cardiovascular medications but did not demonstrate significant improvement.
