ECU Health has announced the successful completion of the first-ever pacemaker implantation utilizing Elutia’s EluPro BioEnvelope on September 5th. This FDA-approved device represents a significant advancement in preventing post-operative complications associated with Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs).
The EluPro BioEnvelope is designed to reduce the risk of infection following the implantation of devices like pacemakers and defibrillators. Eastern North Carolina faces significant challenges with chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension, making access to advanced cardiovascular care crucial for the community. Patients with these co-morbidities are at a higher risk for infection after procedures like pacemaker implantations.
Addressing Post-Operative Complications
Dr. John Catanzaro, John “Jack” Rose distinguished professor and chief of the Division of Cardiology at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and director of the East Carolina Heart Institute at ECU Health Medical Center, emphasized the importance of this innovation. "This new technology is a significant step forward in addressing these challenges, as it not only improves patient outcomes but also helps prevent complications that can arise from traditional procedures," he stated.
The EluPro BioEnvelope's antibiotic-eluting properties are designed to combat infection, a common and potentially severe complication following CIED implantation. By reducing the risk of infection, the device aims to improve overall patient outcomes and reduce the need for additional interventions.
Commitment to Advanced Care
Jay Briley, president of ECU Health Medical Center, highlighted the organization's dedication to bringing cutting-edge solutions to the region. "Being the first to perform this groundbreaking procedure with the EluPro BioEnvelope underscores our commitment to bringing cutting-edge solutions directly to the communities we serve," Briley stated. "Our patients can access the highest level of care without the need to travel long distances, ensuring that advanced cardiovascular treatments are available right here in eastern North Carolina."
This pioneering procedure signifies a crucial step forward in addressing the healthcare needs of eastern North Carolina, particularly for individuals at high risk of post-operative infections following pacemaker implantation. The integration of the EluPro BioEnvelope into standard practice reflects a commitment to innovation and improved patient care within the region.
