Syensqo, a global leader in advanced materials and specialty chemicals, has inaugurated its world-class microbiology, eco-toxicology and biotechnology laboratory in Lyon, France, marking a significant expansion of the company's environmental testing capabilities. The 550 m² facility represents the company's largest microbiology lab globally and serves as a reference center for biodegradation and toxicology testing.
The new laboratory enhances Syensqo's ability to evaluate product safety and environmental impact from the early stages of development, supporting the company's Renewable Materials and Biotechnology Growth Platform. The facility is equipped with advanced capabilities and machine learning technologies designed to accelerate the development of biodegradable-by-design solutions.
Dramatic Capacity Expansion
The laboratory will enable a dramatic increase in biodegradation testing capacity, increasing by tenfold the number of samples tested compared to 2021 levels. This expansion addresses growing demand for environmental testing across multiple market segments, including beauty care, home care, agrochemicals, adhesives and materials.
"Our new microbiology lab significantly strengthens our capacity to create safe and biodegradable solutions," said Thomas Canova, Head of Research and Innovation and Head of Renewable Materials and Biotechnology Growth Platform at Syensqo. "With advanced testing methods, digital capabilities, and increased precision and efficiency, we are accelerating the development of sustainable solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers."
Regulatory Compliance and Service Expansion
The laboratory is targeting Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) accreditation, expected in the second half of the year, which will support product registration processes. Beyond internal research and development, the facility will offer specialized testing services to external customers and partners, leveraging its expertise in evaluating the biodegradability of difficult-to-assess products.
The lab will work closely with other Syensqo laboratories worldwide to improve testing efficiency and reduce time-to-market for new products. This integrated approach aims to significantly boost the company's ability to respond to customer needs across global markets.
Environmental Impact
The laboratory's construction incorporated sustainability initiatives that resulted in a 35% decrease in net power consumption and a 36% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to standard facilities. This environmental focus aligns with the lab's mission to develop environmentally-friendly products and testing methodologies.
The microbiology lab was officially inaugurated on June 12, 2025, in the presence of local authorities and customers, marking a milestone in Syensqo's commitment to advancing sustainable chemistry and materials science.
