Patient-Centric Approaches and Technology Reshape Clinical Trial Landscape, Industry Experts Report

  • Only 39% of clinical trial sites achieve enrollment targets according to Tufts Center, highlighting critical recruitment challenges in drug development.

  • Industry leaders from INC Research, DrugDev, and EMD Serono emphasize the importance of non-traditional partnerships and patient-focused technology solutions to improve trial participation.

  • Experts advocate for incorporating patient feedback through advisory boards and focus groups, while cautioning that technology solutions must be tailored to specific patient populations' needs.

The pharmaceutical industry is witnessing a significant shift toward patient-centric clinical trials, with stakeholders increasingly focusing on innovative solutions to address persistent recruitment and retention challenges.
According to recent data from the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development (CSDD), the current state of clinical trial recruitment presents substantial challenges. Only 39% of sites achieve their enrollment targets, while 37% fall short, and 11% fail to enroll any subjects. These statistics often result in study timelines doubling beyond their planned enrollment periods.

Building Strategic Partnerships for Better Patient Engagement

Christine Phillips, Senior Director of Site and Patient Access at INC Research, emphasizes the critical need for pharmaceutical companies to establish partnerships with patient representative groups. "We have got to act as a signpost so that the patient can make an informed decision of their own," Phillips states, advocating for both qualitative and quantitative approaches to solution development.
Jameisha Brown, Managing Chief Equipping Officer at T3 Health and Wellness, brings a unique perspective from her work with over 18,000 church members in Houston. Her organization has established more than 40 academic biopharma and community research partnerships, demonstrating the potential of non-traditional collaboration models. "I would like to challenge biopharma and research investigators to consider establishing non-traditional partnerships so that we reach racial and ethnic minorities and other traditionally under-represented groups in research," Brown urges.

Technology Integration in Clinical Trials

Eric Delente, President of Patient Solutions at DrugDev, highlights the role of technology in modernizing clinical trials. While acknowledging the importance of human interaction, Delente emphasizes that technology can make the process "much simpler, more transparent, and a lot more effective."
The industry is exploring various technological solutions, including:
  • Patient engagement portals
  • Electronic consent forms
  • Smartphone-based patient diaries
  • Decision support tools
  • Educational resources with plain language explanations

Balancing Technology with Patient Needs

Paulo Moreira, Vice President of Global Clinical Operations at EMD Serono and TransCelerate's Lead for Clinical Research Awareness, cautions against a one-size-fits-all approach to technology implementation. "For a lot of patients, some technology is just not for them, often for very practical reasons," he notes, citing examples of rheumatoid arthritis patients who may struggle with touchscreen devices.

Improving Healthcare Professional Engagement

A significant barrier to clinical trial participation stems from healthcare professionals' hesitation to discuss trial opportunities with patients. Phillips notes that many health professionals lack confidence in communicating trial information, highlighting the need for better support and education within the medical community.

Future Directions

The industry is moving toward more integrated approaches that combine:
  • Patient advisory boards and focus groups
  • Crowdsourcing initiatives
  • Transparent communication about trial commitments
  • Consideration of caregiver and family roles
  • Specialized platforms for information sharing and health literacy improvement
As clinical trials continue to evolve, the focus remains on finding the optimal balance between scientific excellence and patient centricity, ensuring that new approaches enhance rather than complicate the patient experience.
