Reflexology Shows Promise in Reducing Stress and Pain for Breast Cancer Patients During Radiotherapy

  • A quality improvement study of 560 patient encounters demonstrated that reflexology reduced stress by 40% and pain by 24% in breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy treatment.

  • Patients reported a significant 33.3% improvement in overall well-being (P < .0001), with some experiencing relief from chemotherapy-induced neuropathy through reflexology treatment.

  • The successful implementation at Northwell Health Cancer Institute has led to program renewal, highlighting the potential for expanding integrative therapies in cancer care settings.

A recent study conducted at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute has demonstrated promising results for the use of reflexology as a complementary therapy for breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. The comprehensive analysis, spanning from April 2022 through December 2023, evaluated 560 patient encounters and revealed significant improvements in multiple patient-reported outcomes.

Significant Impact on Patient Well-being

The study findings showed remarkable improvements across several key metrics. Patients experienced a 40% reduction in stress levels and a 24% decrease in pain. Additionally, energy levels increased by 33%, while overall patient well-being showed a statistically significant improvement of 33.3% (P < .0001).
Dr. Heather Zinkin, chief of radiation medicine at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, emphasized the importance of staff buy-in for the program's success. "The whole staff really needs to believe in the therapy and buy into it. It needs to be promoted by the whole staff," she explained. This institutional support has been crucial in maintaining the program's continuity for over two and a half years.

Notable Benefits for Neuropathy Patients

One particularly encouraging finding emerged from anecdotal patient reports. According to Dr. Zinkin, many patients suffering from chemotherapy-induced neuropathy reported that reflexology provided unprecedented pain relief. "Reflexology was the only treatment that significantly improved their pain," she noted, highlighting a potential specialized application for this therapy.

Future Implications for Cancer Care

The positive outcomes have secured continued funding for the reflexology program at Northwell Health Cancer Institute. Dr. Zinkin advocates for the expansion of such services beyond their institution, encouraging other facilities to implement not only reflexology but also other integrative therapies such as Reiki and acupuncture.
The success of this program suggests a growing role for complementary therapies in comprehensive cancer care. As healthcare providers seek to address the multiple challenges faced by cancer patients during treatment, integrative approaches like reflexology may offer valuable support in managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
