UFlex Secures FDA Approval for Recycled Polyethylene in Food Packaging: A First for Indian Companies

  • UFlex has received FDA approval for its recycled polyethylene (rPE) in food packaging, marking the first such authorization for an Indian company in food-contact recycling.

  • The company's advanced recycling process removes over 95% of ink from post-consumer recycled materials, positioning it as one of the most sophisticated systems globally for sustainable packaging solutions.

  • UFlex is investing $38 million to build two new recycling plants at its Noida facility with a combined annual capacity to process 39,600 tonnes of plastic waste, supporting India's extended producer responsibility regulations.

Indian packaging solutions company UFlex has achieved a significant milestone by securing approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its innovative recycling process. This landmark authorization enables the company to incorporate recycled polyethylene (rPE) into food packaging applications, representing the first time an Indian company has received such approval for food-contact recycling.
The FDA's endorsement validates UFlex's technological advancement in sustainable packaging and positions the company as a pioneer in the global movement toward circular economy solutions. According to company statements, their proprietary recycling process can remove more than 95% of ink from post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials, making it one of the most advanced recycling technologies available worldwide.

Breakthrough in Sustainable Food Packaging

The approval comes at a critical time when food and beverage companies globally are seeking sustainable packaging alternatives to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and consumer demands. UFlex's recycled polyethylene offers brands a viable pathway to reduce virgin plastic usage while maintaining food safety standards.
"This FDA approval represents a significant advancement in reducing plastic waste and will assist global brands in achieving their sustainability objectives," said a company spokesperson. The certification confirms that the recycled materials meet international standards for food contact applications, a crucial requirement for widespread adoption in the food industry.

Major Investment in Recycling Infrastructure

To capitalize on this regulatory achievement and expand its sustainable packaging capabilities, UFlex has announced a substantial investment of Rs3.15 billion (approximately $38 million) in advanced recycling technologies. This investment will fund the construction of two new state-of-the-art recycling plants at the company's Noida facility in Uttar Pradesh, India.
These new facilities will have a combined annual capacity to process 39,600 tonnes of plastic waste, significantly increasing the company's production of recycled polyethylene terephthalate and rPE materials for food packaging applications. The expansion aligns with India's growing focus on sustainability and its evolving legislative framework for plastic waste management.

Supporting India's Environmental Regulations

The investment comes as India implements extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations, which mandate the inclusion of recycled materials in packaging. These regulations are part of the country's broader strategy to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable packaging solutions.
Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, UFlex's Whole-Time and Sustainability Director and President of Flexible Packaging and New Product Development, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting these initiatives: "In line with our commitment to support the Government of India's EPR legislation, we are proud to announce this significant investment to strengthen our recycling capabilities."
Pillai further noted, "The Indian government has set ambitious targets for the collection, recycling, reuse, and use of recycled content in plastic packaging to promote sustainable packaging. Our enhanced recycling operations will empower brand owners to meet their EPR commitments and set a global benchmark for sustainable packaging."

Global Expansion Continues

This FDA approval and recycling investment follow UFlex's recent announcement of an $86.35 million investment to establish a woven polypropylene bags manufacturing unit in Mexico, indicating the company's commitment to global expansion and diversification of its sustainable packaging portfolio.
The company's strategic investments in both recycling infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities demonstrate its long-term vision to lead the packaging industry's transition toward more sustainable practices while meeting the evolving needs of global markets.
As more countries implement regulations to reduce plastic waste and promote circular economy principles, UFlex's FDA-approved recycling process positions the company to capitalize on growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions across international markets.
