AI-Powered Drug Discovery Startup Peptris Secures $7.7M Series A to Advance Clinical Pipeline
核心洞察
Peptris (搜索) raised Rs 70 crore ($7.7 million) in Series A funding co-led by IAN Alpha Fund (搜索) and Speciale Invest (搜索) to advance its AI-driven drug discovery platform.
The Bengaluru-based startup uses AI models to generate novel molecules and predict critical drug development parameters, addressing the slow and expensive nature of traditional drug discovery.
The funding will support multiple Novel Chemical Entities (搜索) programs and drug repurposing initiatives over the next 24 months, with expansion into US and European markets.
AI-powered drug discovery startup Peptris (搜索) has secured Rs 70 crore ($7.7 million) in Series A funding to accelerate its clinical pipeline and expand its artificial intelligence-driven platform for novel molecule discovery. The round was co-led by IAN Alpha Fund (搜索) and Speciale Invest (搜索), with participation from Tenacity Ventures (搜索), BYT Ventures (搜索), and other investors.
The Bengaluru-based company, founded in 2019 by Narayanan Venkatasubramanian, Shridhar Narayanan, Anand Budni, and Amit Mahajan, has developed proprietary AI models that integrate unsupervised learning and generative AI to design optimized molecules suitable for drug development. The platform addresses critical inefficiencies in traditional drug discovery, which remains slow, expensive, and failure-prone.
AI Platform Tackles Pre-Clinical Challenges
Peptris (搜索) has created AI models to generate novel molecules and predict varied parameters that are critical to reduce failures in drug development. According to the company, this challenge is most acute in the pre-clinical stage, where time, capital, and scientific uncertainty often derail promising programs much before drugs reach the clinical stage.
The platform not only generates novel molecules but also helps predict critical drug development parameters early, enabling faster and better-informed decision-making. This approach has already resulted in the discovery of Novel Chemical Entities (搜索) (NCEs) as well as drug repurposing and rescue opportunities, with multiple programs now advancing towards clinical development.
The startup claims its platform has been used to discover NCEs, repurpose or reposition approved drugs, and rescue molecules that have proven clinically safe. It maintains a pipeline of preclinical assets that have been discovered and validated in vitro and in vivo disease models.
Strategic Expansion Plans
The fresh capital will be used to advance existing programs toward clinical readiness and expand the pipeline over the next 24 months. Peptris (搜索) plans to initiate several new NCE programs alongside multiple drug repurposing and rescue programs targeting shelved clinical-stage drugs of other companies.
On the operational front, the company is looking to enhance teams across biology, chemistry, data science, and AI functions, while setting up dedicated business development units in the US and Europe. Peptris (搜索) operates virtually, focusing on AI-driven discovery while outsourcing wet lab work to contract research organizations and biotech partners.
Market Position and Revenue Model
The startup follows a B2B engagement model, working closely with pharma, biotech, and select FMCG partners to license assets and co-develop programs. Its revenue comes from licensing deals, milestone payments and royalties, with partnerships across academia, biotech and pharma companies and rare disease organizations.
Peptris (搜索) focuses on therapeutic areas including rare diseases (搜索), inflammation (搜索), oncology (搜索), and women's health to deliver impact for patients, caregivers, and healthcare systems globally. The company competes with other AI-led drug discovery startups like ImmunitoAI (搜索), Boltzmann (搜索), Medvolt (搜索), and AarogyaAI (搜索).
Industry Context and Investment Rationale
"Drug discovery is becoming economically unsustainable, with expenses nearly doubling every nine years and pre-clinical development swallowing disproportionate time and capital," said Rajnish Kapur, managing partner at IAN Alpha Fund (搜索). "The use of AI for molecule discovery, which re-engineers the economics of early drug discovery by enabling faster decisions, reducing costs, and significantly accelerating go-to-market timelines, really excited us."
With this Series A round, Peptris (搜索)'s total funding exceeds Rs 78 crore, including a $1 million pre-seed round in 2023 that was also led by Speciale Invest (搜索). The funding comes amid increased government support for the biotech sector, including the recently announced "Biopharma SHAKTI" scheme with a budget outlay of Rs 10,000 crore for five years and the BIRAC-RDI Fund under the Centre's Rs 1 lakh crore RDI initiative.
India's biotech startup ecosystem has expanded significantly, growing from around 50 biotech startups in 2014 to more than 11,000 today, reflecting what Union Minister Jitendra Singh described as a shift from "policy hesitation to policy acceleration" in biotechnology.
