Alteogen licenses ALT-B4 to Novartis in deal worth up to $3.2 billion
核心洞察
Alteogen signed an exclusive option and license agreement with Novartis for its hyaluronidase ALT-B4, with maximum payments reaching $3.223 billion if all options and milestones are achieved.
Novartis secured multiple options to develop and commercialize subcutaneous formulations of biopharmaceuticals using ALT-B4, choosing it over Halozyme's Enhanze (搜索) platform.
ALT-B4's patent protection extends into the early 2040s, while Halozyme's core composition-of-matter patents expire between 2027 and 2029, reinforcing Alteogen's long-term exclusivity position.
South Korea's Alteogen has signed an exclusive option and license agreement with Novartis covering its independently developed hyaluronidase ALT-B4, which incorporates the company's Hybrozyme technology. If all options are exercised and milestones fully achieved, Alteogen could receive up to $3.223 billion (approximately ₩4.4 trillion), with royalties on net sales calculated separately after product launch. Novartis gained exclusive rights, structured as multiple options, to develop and commercialize subcutaneous (SC) formulations of multiple biopharmaceuticals using ALT-B4; specific target products and milestone structures were not disclosed by mutual agreement.
The deal's significance lies in Novartis selecting ALT-B4 over Halozyme's Enhanze (搜索) platform, the previous market leader. Halozyme's core composition-of-matter patents are set to expire between 2027 and 2029, whereas ALT-B4 maintains patent protection until the early 2040s, positioning Alteogen as a long-term alternative for companies seeking to extend blockbuster drug exclusivity. Including the Novartis agreement, Alteogen's technology transfer deals signed this year total ₩6.2259 trillion (approximately $4.6 billion), following a January SC formulation agreement with GSK subsidiary Tesaro for Jemperli, a March two-product deal with Biogen, and an August exclusive license with an undisclosed company — the 10th technology transfer based on the Hybrozyme platform.
Alteogen's platform is also broadening beyond monoclonal antibodies. Novartis's pipeline, targeted for regulatory submission within three years, includes treatments for muscular dystrophy (搜索), myelofibrosis (搜索), atrial fibrillation (搜索), prostate cancer (搜索) radioligand therapy, and CAR-T cell therapies, with observers noting expansion into antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and antibody-oligonucleotide conjugates (AOCs). Hana Securities projects Alteogen revenue growing from ₩102.9 billion in 2024 to ₩580.7 billion in 2026 and ₩1.0082 trillion in 2028, while Samsung Securities raised its target price from ₩350,000 to ₩370,000 with a Buy rating. Despite the announcement, the stock showed short-term weakness amid uncertainty over undisclosed pipelines and milestone terms.
