Ark Invest (search), the asset management firm led by Cathie Wood, has substantially exited its position in German immunotherapy company BioNTech, selling shares valued at approximately $7.4 million over two consecutive days in early July. The divestment leaves the Ark Genomic Revolution ETF (ARKG) with just 307 shares of BioNTech, worth a little more than $28,000 as of July 10, making it the smallest holding in the entire exchange-traded fund.
The sales occurred on July 7, when the fund sold over 44,000 shares, followed by an additional sale of over 78,000 shares on July 8. Given that ARKG is an actively managed ETF, frequent portfolio adjustments are common; however, the near-complete liquidation signals that Ark Invest (search) has effectively moved on from the position.
Revenue Decline and Financial Headwinds
BioNTech faces mounting financial challenges that may have contributed to Ark's decision. The company's revenue is projected to fall to between €2.0 billion ($2.2 billion) and €2.3 billion ($2.6 billion) in 2026, a significant decrease from the €2.9 billion ($3.3 billion) reported in 2025. This decline is largely attributed to an expected drop in revenue from its COVID-19 (search) vaccine, developed in partnership with Pfizer.
The company's profitability has also deteriorated. BioNTech reported back-to-back net losses in 2024 and 2025, following a net profit of €900 million ($1 billion) in 2023. That trend of net losses is expected to continue, as the company already posted a net loss in its 2026 first-quarter earnings report.
Stock performance has reflected these difficulties: BioNTech shares are down nearly 4% year to date and have declined more than 17% over the last 12 months.
Leadership Transition and Strategic Pivot
Compounding the financial pressures, BioNTech's co-founders — CEO Uğur Şahin and Chief Medical Officer Özlem Türeci — are set to leave the company by the end of 2026. Their departures represent significant roles to fill, particularly as the company navigates a strategic shift from vaccines toward oncology treatments.
The leadership transition comes at a critical juncture. BioNTech currently has only one commercial product — its COVID-19 (search) vaccine, which is experiencing slumping sales — despite maintaining a clinical pipeline of more than 25 phase 2 or phase 3 trials in oncology. The company must now find new leadership to guide this pipeline toward potential commercialization while managing declining revenues from its sole marketed product.
