Asia's Longevity Economy Boom: Luxury Clinics Surge Amid Scientific Scrutiny and Policy Gaps

Asia is witnessing an unprecedented surge in high-end longevity clinics as the region confronts a demographic transformation: by 2030, one in four Asians will be over 60. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore have already crossed the threshold into "super-aged" status, with Thailand and Malaysia fast approaching. This shift has catalyzed a $4.6 trillion industry that promises to extend not just lifespan, but "healthspan"—the number of years lived in good health.
"People increasingly want to remain healthy, productive and independent, rather than simply living longer," Andrea Maier, a gerontology professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), told Fortune.
The wellness and hospitality sector is capturing much of this market. In October, METT Singapore partnered with the Longevity Suite, a European anti-aging clinic, to open its first Asian branch within the hotel. Luxury chain Capella announced its first venture into "wellness-integrated branded residences" featuring wellness concierges and vitality checkpoints for biometric monitoring, with a 262-unit development underway in Bangkok, Thailand.
Rising incomes across Asia are fueling demand. As incomes rise, the newly wealthy can devote more resources to non-essential health, wellness, and preventive services. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated this shift. "Many people started treating luxury as something to do with health and well-being," said Lau Kong Cheen, a marketing expert from the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). "They realized that they couldn't take life for granted, and the cars, watches and handbags they buy would amount to nothing if they don't have good health."
The Longevity Clinic Landscape
Many longevity clinics offer tech-enabled treatments ranging from cryotherapy and hyperbaric oxygen treatments to red light therapy and dry floats. "Hot and cold therapies have been used for ages," said Nort Janssen, CEO of the Longevity Suite Asia. "The fact that we now have saunas and a big freezer that is -87 degrees Celsius just makes them a bit easier to perform."
Communal bathhouses like the Ice Bath Club and Nowhere Baths have emerged in financial hubs such as Singapore and Hong Kong, where health-conscious millennial and Gen Z consumers pay substantial sums for cold plunges. "People are constantly talking about it on Instagram and TikTok," Janssen noted.
Asia's longevity boom is also incorporating local traditions. "In the U.S., longevity is often linked to biohacking, wearables, supplements and performance optimization," said Ada Lo, an associate professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. "But in Asia, longevity is framed more holistically, combining modern diagnostics with traditional healing, meditation, food-as-medicine and high-touch hospitality."
New resort brands like Blossom House by China's Huazhu Group integrate tenets of traditional Chinese medicine such as shiliao (food therapy). Janssen confirmed the Longevity Suite's APAC branches will include Ayurvedic dosha mapping and TCM-based Qi assessments alongside Western diagnostics.
Scientific Validation Lags Behind Market Enthusiasm
Despite the commercial momentum, experts caution that many longevity treatments lack robust scientific backing. "Public enthusiasm has outpaced scientific validation," Maier explained. "This creates tremendous opportunities, but also considerable risks if interventions are marketed before robust evidence exists."
A landmark 2025 study published in PLOS One found that hot and cold plunges speed up post-exercise muscle recovery in men, but not in women. Maier pointed to treatments like red light therapy and cold exposure where evidence on healthspan extension remains sparse. Even more advanced interventions face questions: "NAD+ biology is scientifically fascinating, but evidence supporting routine supplementation in healthy adults remains limited," she said, citing possible side effects of stem cell therapies including immune rejection and teratoma tumors.
The broader biotechnology sector is exploring biomedical treatments with longevity implications. Studies of GLP-1 drugs show improvements across multiple health indicators, including lower blood glucose levels, reduced rates of cardiovascular death, and slower progression of chronic kidney disease (search). "There are signals that GLP-1s could be the first true longevity drug," Alex Zhavoronkov, founder of AI drug discovery firm Insilico Medicine (search), said at the Fortune Innovation Forum last November.
Cost and Accessibility Concerns
Longevity treatments remain expensive. Chi Longevity, co-founded by Maier, offers packages ranging from 4,250 Singapore dollars ($3,290) to 18,000 Singapore dollars ($13,920). GLP-1 drugs are similarly costly: Ozempic is typically priced between $350 and $500 per month, while Wegovy costs $1,350 per month, according to manufacturer Novo Nordisk.
"If longevity becomes only a luxury product, it widens the gap between those who can afford preventive wellness and those who cannot," said Zilmiyah Kamble, a senior lecturer at Singapore's James Cook University.
Most insurers, including China's Ping An and Hong Kong-based AIA and Prudential, do not fund elective longevity treatments. Yet a Ping An spokesperson acknowledged the shifting paradigm: "Traditional passive healthcare and post-incident claims settlements alone are no longer sufficient to meet the health needs arising from longevity. What's needed is more proactive health management."
Thailand's Strategic Gap
While Thailand ranks fifth globally for medical tourism and has invested in genomic medicine—the first phase of Genomics Thailand sequenced over 34,000 genomes against a 50,000 target with a budget exceeding 4.47 billion baht—the country lacks a unified national longevity strategy.
The World Health Organization projects the global population aged 60 and above will rise from 1 billion in 2020 to 1.4 billion by 2030. Research by the World Economic Forum and Harvard School of Public Health estimated that five major NCD groups—cardiovascular diseases (search), chronic respiratory diseases, cancer (search), diabetes (search), and mental-health conditions (search)—would cause cumulative global economic losses of $47 trillion between 2010 and 2030. In Thailand alone, NCDs cost approximately 1.6 trillion baht annually, or 9.7% of GDP.
By contrast, Singapore's Healthier SG programme had registered over 960,000 residents by August 2024, while Japan's elderly-care technology market is projected to reach $3.76 billion by 2033. The UAE has collected more than 600,000 DNA samples through its Emirati Genome Programme and opened its first longevity clinic in Dubai in September 2024.
Thailand's health budget remains concentrated on treating illness rather than prevention, even as the country ages at the third-fastest rate globally. More than half the population continues behaviors associated with higher NCD risks, including excessive sugar, fat, and salt consumption, despite over 90% of working-age respondents demonstrating high health literacy.
The Evidence-Based Path Forward
Ironically, the interventions with the strongest scientific evidence for extending healthspan—physical activity, nutrition, sleep, vaccination, mental wellbeing, and early disease detection—tend to be the cheapest. "They sound boring," Maier said, "but when done with precision, they're hugely effective."
