The advancement marks the pharmaceutical giant's entry into the lucrative obesity (search) treatment market currently dominated by Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk.
CEO Pascal Soriot expressed confidence in the drug's competitive potential during a press conference with reporters, stating, "The only thing I would say is that we have a very competitive profile." He emphasized that the company would not make substantial investments without believing in the product's prospects, describing elecoglipron (search) as "a whole agent, with a competitive profile."
Weight Management Strategy Focus
Soriot outlined AstraZeneca's strategic approach to obesity (search) treatment, emphasizing drugs that improve both patient compliance and the quality of weight management. The company aims to help patients "lose less muscle and more fat," differentiating its approach in the competitive landscape. Trial results for elecoglipron (search) are scheduled for presentation at the American Diabetes Association conference in June.
The weight-loss drug development comes as AstraZeneca also advances a monthly injectable product in the same therapeutic area, competing with similar approaches from companies like Pfizer, which recently announced trial data for its monthly injectable candidate.
$80 Billion Revenue Target Reinforced
During the 44th J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, AstraZeneca doubled down on its ambitious $80 billion revenue target by 2030. CFO Aradhana Sarin acknowledged that when announced in May 2024, "$80 billion was obviously a stretch target" but noted that the company "felt it was within reach." A year and a half later, she stated, "We do feel it is very much within reach."
Consensus estimates have increasingly aligned with AstraZeneca's projections, rising from $67 billion in 2024 to around $76 billion by mid-2025, with current forecasts nearing the $80 billion target. "I think people are getting more confident," Sarin observed.
Near-Term Product Pipeline
AstraZeneca expects to bring several high-value products to market in the near term, including baxdrostat, camizestrant, and gefurulimab, all currently under regulatory review. Baxdrostat, an investigational aldosterone synthase (search) inhibitor for hard-to-control hypertension (search), received FDA new drug application acceptance last month and is anticipated to receive approval in the first half of 2026, potentially representing the first new hypertension treatment in decades.

Oncology Pipeline Strength
The company's cancer pipeline, particularly its antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), represents a key contributor to the 2030 revenue goal. With eight wholly owned clinical-stage ADCs, AstraZeneca has positioned itself to "address around 80% of the potential patient population in our focused solid tumor areas," according to Sarin.
Cell Therapy Portfolio
AstraZeneca's cell therapy portfolio includes AZD-0120 for multiple myeloma (search) and the bispecific T cell engager surovatamig (search) for blood cancers. Both assets factor into the company's $80 billion target and "have $5 billion-plus non-risk-adjusted peak revenue potential," Sarin noted.
Financial Performance
The company reported fourth-quarter results that met expectations, with core earnings per share edging up 1% to $2.12 and revenue rising 4% to $15.5 billion. For 2026, AstraZeneca anticipates mid-to-high single-digit percentage growth in total revenue and low double-digit percentage growth in core EPS.
The company plans to announce more than 20 Phase 3 trial readouts this year, representing potential peak revenue of more than $10 billion. AstraZeneca's stock rose 2% in London trade, having bounced 44% from April lows to become the second-largest company by market cap in the U.K., behind only HSBC.
