AstraZeneca will invest nearly 200 million yuan, about $29.8 million, to upgrade its new drug development and supply building at its Wuxi base in China.
The upgraded facility will support process development and production of an investigational cardiovascular drug and back its global supply after commercialization.
The project covers roughly 5,800 square meters, is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2029, and targets annual capacity of 400 million tablets.
AstraZeneca announced on September 17 that it will invest nearly 200 million yuan (approximately $29.8 million) to comprehensively upgrade the new drug development and supply building at its Wuxi manufacturing and supply base in China. The investment is intended to support process development and production of an investigational innovative cardiovascular drug, as well as to provide backing for the drug's global supply after commercialization.
Facility Scope and Capacity
The project covers approximately 5,800 square meters of floor space and is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2029. It is expected to reach an annual production capacity of 400 million tablets. Once completed, the Wuxi base will participate in commercial production process development from the drug research and development stage, positioning it to become AstraZeneca's first facility in the Asia-Pacific region with the capability to support global launch and supply of new drugs.
Front-Loading the R&D-to-Supply Chain
The Wuxi base is one of AstraZeneca's key manufacturing and supply hubs in China. According to the company, the upgrade focuses on the process development stage for an investigational new drug in the cardiovascular field, meaning the connection between R&D and production will be further front-loaded, helping to shorten the cycle from laboratory to commercial supply. The company said the upgrade is expected to provide more stable production capacity assurance for its future global launches of cardiovascular pipeline products.
Broader China Investment Commitments
AstraZeneca stated that the upgrade represents another important step in deepening its full value chain presence in China. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to invest over 100 billion yuan (approximately $14.9 billion) in China by 2030. According to market sources, AstraZeneca also plans to invest $15 billion in China before 2030.
In recent years, AstraZeneca has continued to expand its localization efforts in the China market, spanning R&D, manufacturing, and supply chain. The company's local unit described the Wuxi investment as a move to modernize its Chinese operations and strengthen its foothold in China's healthcare market, aligning with growing demand for advanced cardiovascular treatments in the region.
