"This suggests that blocking two different mechanisms, one governed by PD1 (search) and the other by NOD2, combines to supercharge the immune system against cancer cells," explained Professor Chris Goodnow, co-lead of the study from the Garvan Institute and UNSW.

The immune-enhancing effects of less active NOD2 variants extended well beyond lung cancer. The findings could lead to the development of genetic screening protocols that identify patients most likely to benefit from specific immunotherapy regimens. Additionally, the research may inform the development of combination therapies that deliberately target both PD1 (search) and NOD2 pathways to maximize immune activation against tumors.
