The approvals mark a pivotal moment for the Indian biosimilar manufacturer as it strengthens its presence in high-value therapeutic areas.
Strong Regulatory Momentum Drives Portfolio Expansion
The denosumab approvals represent the culmination of exceptional regulatory momentum for Biocon Biologics (search), which has secured four FDA approvals in just 10 months. This achievement has expanded the company's US portfolio to nine products, establishing a diversified biosimilar platform across multiple therapeutic areas.
"We expect to be among the first, if not the only early entrants into this market," said Shreehas Tambe, MD & CEO of Biocon Biologics (search), highlighting the company's early-mover advantage in the denosumab space where only two to three players have launched so far.
The company's recent launch pipeline includes ustekinumab (Yesintek), aflibercept (Yesafili), insulin aspart (Kirsty (search)), bevacizumab (Jobevne (search)), and the newly approved denosumab products Bosaya (search) and Aukelso (search). Biocon has also settled with Amgen on denosumab, clearing the path for its upcoming US launch.
Pricing Durability Differentiates Biosimilars from Generics
Contrary to conventional assumptions about biosimilar pricing pressure, Tambe emphasized that biosimilars demonstrate greater pricing durability compared to generic drugs. "The assumption that prices fall precipitously is a myth… biosimilars are far more durable," he explained, citing past oncology launches where Biocon held over 25% of the US market.
This pricing stability is already evident in Biocon's existing cancer (search) therapy portfolio, where Fulphila (pegfilgrastim) and Ogivri (trastuzumab) have achieved over 25% market share in the US, demonstrating the company's ability to maintain competitive positioning in established biosimilar markets.
Regulatory Changes Create Development Advantages
Biocon stands to benefit significantly from new USFDA (search) draft guidelines that propose eliminating phase-III clinical trial requirements for certain biosimilars supported by strong chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) data. These guidelines remove the need for most comparative efficacy trials, traditionally the most expensive and time-consuming phase of biosimilar development.
"Once we get the first approval without phase-III trials, it will set the stage for more launches and significantly reduce our R&D costs," said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, executive chairperson of Biocon. She noted that this regulatory shift will allow the company to "do a lot more for the same amount of R&D spend," providing a clear competitive advantage.
The new guidelines also ease pathways for biosimilars to achieve interchangeable status, enabling pharmacists and patients quicker access to lower-cost alternatives.
Strategic Positioning in Insulin and GLP-1 Markets
Biocon has established a unique market position as the only company offering interchangeable biosimilar insulin analogues—insulin glargine (Semglee) and insulin aspart (Kirsty (search))—in the US market. This positioning becomes particularly valuable as traditional insulin manufacturers shift focus toward GLP-1 therapies.
"We are in a sweet spot and a very unique position," Mazumdar-Shaw told The Economic Times. "We are the only player with interchangeable insulins at a time when traditional insulin manufacturers are shifting their focus toward GLP-1s."
The company's longstanding expertise in insulin manufacturing, combined with patient familiarity with its devices, provides natural advantages in developing GLP-1 analogues. "We have done this successfully for insulins and for liraglutide and are confident that semaglutide will be quite straightforward for us," Mazumdar-Shaw added.
Growth Trajectory and Market Leadership
Biocon Biologics (search) plans to maintain its launch momentum with two product launches scheduled for this year and three additional launches planned for 2026. The company has built what Mazumdar-Shaw describes as "a large basket of biosimilars now in the market" with a scale that few competitors can match.
The 2022 acquisition of Viatris' global biosimilars portfolio for $3.3 billion, despite creating $1.2 billion in acquisition-related debt, has positioned Biocon among the world's top five biosimilar companies. "People focus too much on the acquisition debt and not enough on the fact that we have become a leading global biosimilars company," Mazumdar-Shaw noted.
Looking ahead, Mazumdar-Shaw characterized the company's growth trajectory over the next five years as "very exciting," with larger opportunities emerging beyond 2030 as next-generation cancer (search) drugs including PD-1 (search) inhibitors come off patent. The parent company Biocon maintains a market capitalization of approximately ₹49,374 crore, with shares rising nearly 3% over the past year.
