Dr. Julie Brahmer, a medical oncologist at Johns Hopkins, recently discussed how biomarker testing is transforming the lung cancer (搜索) treatment landscape. "A biomarker is actually a test that's done on a cancer biopsy to try to help us figure out how best to treat the cancer itself," Dr. Brahmer explained.
PD-L1 (搜索) Testing and the "Invisibility Cloak"
One of the key biomarker tests highlighted by Dr. Brahmer is PD-L1 (搜索) testing. This test detects a specific protein on the surface of cancer cells that plays a critical role in immune evasion. "PD-L1 is used by cancer in order to make itself invisible to your immune system. It's kind of like an invisibility cloak," Dr. Brahmer said. "Drugs have been developed in order to block that and allow your immune system to actually recognize the cancer."

A Patient's Perspective: 11 Years of Survival
Colette Smith, an 11-year lung cancer (搜索) survivor, shared her personal journey of advocacy and survival. "I'm proof that [biomarker testing] saves lives because I'm currently living with no evidence of disease," Smith stated. While she did not receive PD-L1 (搜索) testing specifically, knowing the mutation driving her cancer enabled her physicians to devise a precise treatment plan that included surgical removal of her upper left lung.
Smith emphasized the importance of patient self-advocacy: "I learned to speak up and ask questions, even if I were uncomfortable with the questions. And that is what actually saved my life. I pushed for answers, and when I was not getting the answers that I deserved, I changed my treatment team and doctor."
What Patients Should Ask
Dr. Brahmer outlined the essential questions every newly diagnosed lung cancer (搜索) patient should ask their physician. "When you're first diagnosed with lung cancer, you want to ask several questions. One, what stage is the lung cancer? What type of lung cancer do I have? And then what biomarker testing has been run on that biopsy that was performed," she advised. She stressed that biomarker testing should include both mutation testing and PD-L1 (搜索) testing to determine the optimal treatment approach.
Crucially, Dr. Brahmer confirmed that comprehensive biomarker testing is standard treatment and "should be available at all hospitals."
Beyond Smoking: Broadening the Conversation
Both experts addressed a common misconception about lung cancer (搜索). "You don't have to be a smoker to get lung cancer," Dr. Brahmer noted. She advised that anyone—smoker or never-smoker—who develops symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain should ask whether lung cancer could be the cause. For current or former smokers, she recommended inquiring about how lung cancer screening fits into their overall cancer screening regimen.
