BiomX Discontinues Phase 2b Cystic Fibrosis Trial Due to Safety Concerns
核心洞察
BiomX (搜索) has discontinued its Phase 2b clinical trial of nebulized phage therapy BX004 for cystic fibrosis patients following unexpectedly high rates of adverse events and Data Monitoring Committee recommendations.
The company will implement significant cost-cutting measures including workforce reduction while evaluating strategic alternatives to maximize shareholder value.
BiomX (搜索) plans to focus remaining resources on advancing BX011 (搜索), its phage cocktail targeting Staphylococcus aureus infections in diabetic foot infections, subject to available funding.
BiomX (搜索) Inc. has announced the discontinuation of its Phase 2b clinical trial evaluating nebulized phage therapy BX004 in cystic fibrosis patients with chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, following safety concerns and recommendations from an independent Data Monitoring Committee.
The clinical-stage biotechnology company made the decision after conducting an internal analysis that revealed unexpectedly high rates of adverse events in the trial. The discontinuation follows a previously announced safety review by the independent DMC on November 25, 2025.
Safety Concerns Drive Trial Termination
"Our first priority is the improved treatment, health and safety of patients in the cystic fibrosis community, including those who enrolled in this trial," said Jonathan Solomon, Chief Executive Officer of BiomX (搜索). "Patients living with cystic fibrosis continue to face significant challenges and require improved treatment options, including for Pseudomonas infections."
Solomon explained that the projected timelines and resources required to evaluate the safety issues and potentially proceed with an alternative dosing or treatment strategy exceeded the company's currently available resources, leading to the difficult decision to discontinue the program.
Strategic Restructuring and Focus Shift
In response to the trial discontinuation, BiomX (搜索) plans to implement significant cost-cutting measures, including a substantial reduction in workforce, while reviewing strategic alternatives aimed at maximizing shareholder value.
The company will redirect its focus toward BX011 (搜索), its fixed phage cocktail targeting Staphylococcus aureus infections in patients with diabetic foot infections, subject to the availability of sufficient financial and other resources.
Phage Therapy Platform
BiomX (搜索) specializes in developing natural and engineered phage cocktails and personalized phage treatments designed to target and destroy harmful bacteria for treating chronic diseases with substantial unmet medical needs. The company utilizes its proprietary BOLT (BacteriOphage Lead to Treatment) platform to customize phage compositions against validated bacterial targets.
The discontinuation of the BX004 program represents a significant setback for the company's cystic fibrosis treatment development efforts, though the company continues to see potential in its Staphylococcus aureus-targeting program for diabetic foot infections.
