In a joint letter to Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, the BMA and the British Dental Association (search) (BDA) cautioned that reducing investment in this specialist workforce would have "disastrous" consequences for an already fragile sector.
Funding Cuts Threaten Pay Parity and Workforce Stability
The Strategic Priorities Grant funding has historically supported pay parity between medical and dental academics and their NHS counterparts—a long-standing commitment viewed as essential to attracting and retaining doctors and dentists in medical education and research. The BMA medical academic staff committee co-chairs, Dr Jonathan Gibb and Professor David Strain, alongside BDA representatives Petros Mylonas and Swati Nehete, stated in their letter:
"This funding supports pay parity between medical and dental academics and their NHS counterparts – a long-standing commitment that is vital to attracting doctors and dentists into medical education and research. Reducing investment in this workforce will weaken the UK's capacity for research, innovation and medical education, ultimately affecting patient care, NHS resilience and economic growth."
The BMA further noted that the Medical Schools Council (search) reported only two weeks prior a further reduction in medical academics to just 3.2% of the consultant workforce, underscoring the precarious state of the clinical academic pipeline.
A Contradiction in Government Policy
The BMA's letter highlights what it describes as a fundamental lack of coordination between government departments. While the Department of Health has articulated ambitions for an innovative health service and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology aims for world-leading life science research, the Department for Education's funding cuts target the very workforce responsible for delivering these objectives.
Professor David Strain and Dr Jonathan Gibb commented: "In government, one hand says it recognises the role medical academics have in contributing to economic growth, whilst the other hand cuts the funding needed to employ the people leading that work."
The letter to the Education Secretary further emphasized: "These cuts are fundamentally at odds with the Government's stated priorities. Ministers have rightly emphasised the importance of life sciences, research and innovation to economic growth, improved patient outcomes and NHS transformation."
The Unique Role of Clinical Academics
Medical and dental academics occupy a distinctive position spanning both the health and education sectors. According to the BMA, these clinicians lead the development of new diagnostics, treatments, and models of care through world-leading research, and are responsible for up to one-third of university grant income. Simultaneously, they educate and train the next generation of healthcare professionals.
"Reducing investment in this workforce will have consequences not only for research and innovation, but also for medical education, patient care, the long-term resilience of the NHS and the health of the UK economy," the BMA and BDA letter stated.
Call for Cross-Departmental Coordination
The BMA is urging the Government to reconsider the cuts and to develop a long-term, sustainable approach to supporting medical and dental academics. This includes establishing appropriate mechanisms for pay-setting and funding to ensure continued pay parity with NHS colleagues.
"A coordinated approach across health, education and research policy is essential to safeguarding the future workforce and ensuring the UK can continue to deliver the research, innovation and economic growth that the Government has rightly identified as national priorities," the letter concluded.
