One of the summit's key revelations was the enhanced understanding among participants of pharmacists' essential role in infectious disease management. "One of the doctors on our board said to me that he would be lost without his IV pharmacist, and he's an infectious disease doctor," Lillis explained. "Simply because there's so much change, and he's trying to pay attention to the clinical stuff, and having somebody who really knows the ins and outs of the drugs and the dosages and the pluses and minuses, everything is really important to him."

This recognition helped patients understand that pharmacists could play a more expanded role in their care, particularly infectious disease pharmacists who work alongside physicians as clinical experts.

Persistent Patient Challenges Despite Therapeutic Advances

Despite progress in bringing new C. difficile treatments to market through FDA approvals, the patient experience has not significantly improved. The summit revealed a troubling trend of patients blaming themselves for their C. difficile infections. "Many people expressed a sense that C difficile was their fault, that they were to blame for getting this disease," Lillis observed. Evolving Demographics and Advocacy Engagement

"These agencies, though they're not perfect—and I certainly have critiques of all of them—they serve a really vital function in our political economy, in our health and our wellbeing, in our country's role as an innovative superpower," Lillis emphasized.

Lillis drew parallels between current attitudes toward infectious diseases and historical stigmatization, referencing his experience coming out as gay in 1989 during the HIV (search)Search disease epidemic. He argued that framing infectious diseases as individual failures misses the fundamental purpose of public health.

"Public health is public health, and it's really a societal issue," he stated. "If we want a healthier population, then we actually need investment in our public health, not to diminish our public health."

He highlighted systemic factors that influence health outcomes, including workplace policies, minimum wage levels, agricultural policies, and access to sick leave, arguing that many chronic diseases result from policy choices made over the past 40 years.
