Cipla Faces Major Production Crisis as Cancer Drug Manufacturing Halt Drives 57% Profit Decline
核心洞察
Cipla reported a steeper-than-expected 57% quarterly profit decline to 6.76 billion rupees, primarily due to production halt of key cancer (搜索) therapy Lanreotide at its Greece-based manufacturing partner.
The company's exclusive manufacturer Pharmathen (搜索) temporarily paused Lanreotide production to address U.S. FDA remediation requirements following a Form 483 inspection citing nine observations.
Cipla is actively exploring alternative manufacturing sites and expects Lanreotide supply restoration in the first half of fiscal 2027, while planning new respiratory and peptide drug launches to offset revenue impact.
Cipla, India's third-largest drugmaker by revenue, reported a dramatic 57% decline in quarterly profit, falling well short of analyst expectations as production disruptions of a key cancer (搜索) therapy and acquisition costs severely impacted financial performance.
The company's consolidated net profit plummeted to 6.76 billion rupees ($73.8 million) for the quarter ended December 31, down from 15.71 billion rupees in the same period last year. Analysts had expected a more modest decline to 12.42 billion rupees, according to LSEG data.
Manufacturing Crisis Hits Key Cancer Drug
The profit decline was primarily driven by a production halt at Pharmathen (搜索), Cipla's exclusive contract manufacturer for Lanreotide, a critical tumor (搜索) therapy that ranks among the company's top three products in the U.S. market. The Greece-based facility temporarily paused production during the reporting quarter to address U.S. FDA remediation requirements.
According to Achin Gupta, Cipla's global CEO and MD-designate, Pharmathen (搜索)'s Rodopi facility was inspected in November and received a Form 483 citing nine observations. Drug production has been on hold since December, significantly impacting the company's North America business revenue, which fell 22% to 14.85 billion rupees.
"We are working closely with our partner Pharmathen (搜索) and all other relevant stakeholders to explore every viable option to restore normal supply levels as quickly as possible," Gupta said during the company's Q3 FY26 earnings call. "In parallel, we are also evaluating alternative sites for this product."
Strategic Response and Timeline
Cipla expects Lanreotide supply to resume in the first half of fiscal 2027. The company is actively pursuing risk mitigation strategies, including technology transfer to alternative manufacturing sites. "From a de-risking perspective, we are looking at a second site outside the current market. Talks with our partner are well advanced, since the technology will need to be transferred to the new location," Gupta explained.
The production disruption is expected to affect Cipla's $1 billion revenue guidance for its U.S. business in FY26, with CFO Ashish Adukia noting some impact in Q4 and a greater hit expected in Q1 FY27.
Additional Financial Pressures
Beyond the Lanreotide crisis, Cipla faced additional financial pressures from strategic acquisitions and market competition. The company paid 11 billion rupees to Swiss drugmaker Novartis during the quarter to acquire manufacturing and marketing rights for diabetes (搜索) drugs, along with a 1.1 billion rupee acquisition of Inzpera Heathscience Limited (搜索) for access to pediatric pharmaceutical products.
The company also continues navigating pricing pressure for its generic version of Bristol-Myers Squibb (搜索)'s cancer (搜索) drug Revlimid, which faces broader generic competition as patent settlements allow unrestricted sales.
Mitigation Strategy Through New Launches
Despite the challenges, Cipla management outlined plans to offset revenue impact through strategic product launches. Outgoing CEO Umang Vohra announced the company is in "advanced stages of launching three major respiratory drugs over the next 12 months," including GSK's blockbuster asthma (搜索) therapy Advair.
Cipla expects to be the sole generic player for two of the three respiratory drugs for a considerable period. Additionally, the company has lined up three peptide-based drugs for launch over the next fiscal year, which management expects to emerge as leading sales drivers in regulated markets, particularly the U.S.
Mixed Regional Performance
While North America revenue declined significantly, Cipla's performance in India, its largest market, showed resilience with revenue increasing 10% to 34.57 billion rupees. India and North America together contribute roughly three-fourths of Cipla's total revenue.
Overall company revenue remained flat year-over-year at 70.75 billion rupees, below analyst expectations of 74.76 billion rupees, while expenses rose 14% to 61.12 billion rupees, including higher R&D spending of 494 crore rupees, up 37% year-over-year.
