Mumbai-based pharmaceutical giant Cipla has announced a strategic partnership with Immunoadoptive Cell Therapy Private (ImmunoACT (搜索)) to bring India's first indigenously developed CAR-T cell therapy to Africa, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to cutting-edge cancer treatment across the continent.
Through its subsidiary Medpro Pharmaceutica (搜索), Cipla has secured an exclusive license and supply agreement to commercialize talicabtagene autoleucel (搜索) in South Africa, Algeria, and Morocco. The therapy, developed through a collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (搜索) (IIT-B) and Tata Memorial Hospital, represents a breakthrough in making advanced immunotherapy accessible in underserved markets.
Therapeutic Profile and Clinical Impact
Talicabtagene autoleucel (搜索) is designed to treat patients with relapsed or refractory B-cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (搜索) (B-NHL) and B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (搜索) (B-ALL) after other therapies have failed. The therapy works by extracting the patient's blood, separating T cells (搜索) and engineering them to identify and destroy cancer cells, before reintroducing them into the patient's body through a single infusion.
The treatment has demonstrated high efficacy, durable responses, and a well-tolerated safety profile in over 500 patients treated in India, leading to reduced ancillary healthcare costs. This clinical experience provides a robust foundation for the therapy's expansion into African markets.
Cost-Effective Innovation
A key advantage of this indigenous CAR-T therapy is its affordability compared to international alternatives. The therapy costs approximately ₹40 lakh (roughly $48,000), which represents about one-tenth the cost of international therapies. According to Rahul Purwar, ImmunoACT (搜索)'s Founder and Chairman and professor at IIT-B, Cipla's pricing strategy will position the therapy at "a fraction of the global cost," consistent with the company's legacy of providing affordable medicines.
Manufacturing and Distribution Strategy
Under the partnership agreement, ImmunoACT (搜索) will be responsible for manufacturing the therapy, while Cipla will handle commercialization within the agreed territories. Initially, the therapy will be developed in India, with patient blood samples transported to India for processing before being sent back to the treatment centers.
Purwar indicated that if the scale increases to approximately 100 patients per year, ImmunoACT (搜索) could consider establishing a manufacturing base closer to patients. The first implementation will be in South Africa, where Cipla will conduct the required clinical trials.

This partnership echoes Cipla's groundbreaking initiative from 25 years ago when the company made HIV/AIDS drugs available at affordable costs in Africa.
