The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR (search)) is set to transform into the Research Delivery Network (search) (RDN) in April 2024, marking a significant step towards enhancing the support and delivery of high-quality research across England. This transition aims to build upon the successes of the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) and further strengthen the UK's position in global clinical research.
A Unified National Network
The RDN will operate as a single, cohesive organization throughout England, ensuring a consistent and high-quality experience for both the research and healthcare communities. This unified approach will facilitate the sharing of innovations and best practices across different regions, while also addressing the unique needs and challenges of local research systems and populations.
The network will consist of 12 Regional Research Delivery Networks (RRDNs) working in collaboration with a central Coordinating Centre and the Department of Health and Social Care. This collaborative leadership model will leverage regional expertise to enhance national decision-making and coordination.
Strategic Priorities and Enhanced Support
The RDN will focus on supporting a wide range of research studies, including clinical trials and public health initiatives that require recruitment within NHS settings. A key strategic ambition for the new network is to increase the amount of commercial clinical research conducted in the UK.
To achieve this, the RDN will provide a range of services and support for research delivery, including recruitment resources, tools for research delivery, analysis and advice, and workforce development. It will also work closely with R&D teams to address their needs and facilitate the efficient conduct of research.
Building Capacity and Expanding Reach
The RDN is committed to developing the strategic capacity and capability of the research system. This includes increasing the number of researchers, sites, studies, and participants involved in research. The network will also prioritize bringing research to underserved regions and communities with major health and care needs, ensuring that the benefits of research are spread across the entire country.
Adapting to a Changing Landscape
The RDN will continuously learn and adapt to the evolving domestic and global environment for health and care, life sciences, and health research. It will collaborate with partners across the UK health and care research landscape to drive improved efficiency across the system and maintain the UK's position as a leader in clinical research.
